Thebe Tourism are holding their annual Staff Community Project Day on Saturday 28th November 2009. Their staff are volunteering their time to build a FoodTent for the 850 plus Children at Delta Primary School in Retreat. This is a closed event and only open to Thebe Tourism Staff Members. The day promises to be a fun-filled and very rewarding community experience!!!

Delta Primary was established in an impoverished area on the Cape Flats as a result of the Group Areas Act in 1963. It was the fourth school to be built in the area – hence its name. Delta Primary has a proud tradition of commitment to the community. Over the years they have staged a number of very successful productions for the community and in recent times they have focused on the social welfare of their community through various awareness programmes.

The school has Grades R-7 and currently has 850 learners from the neighbouring areas of Capricorn and Montague Village. They have an existing feeding scheme in the form of a Food Kitchen Container. It is supported by the Peninsula Feeding Scheme and they have a little support from the community in terms of bread donations. Approximately half the children are fed through this scheme (from the lower income groups) . They have enough space to accommodate a FoodTent and two caretakers that would be responsible for the watering of the plants. They also have a very enthusiastic Science teacher Mr Solomon who would use the FoodTent as an educational opportunity for the learners. They have a small vegetable patch at the school.

In respect of the broader community, Delta Primary intends opening their computer facility for computer lessons, computer aided tuition and Internet access (as an Internet Café) for research after hours to members of the community. An important aim of the computer centre at Delta Primary is community upliftment by providing training, employment opportunities and networking possibilities with local and global educational institutions and businesses whereby mutually favourable partnerships and relationships can be developed among all role-players.
